Mercedes-Benz has long threatened G-Class fans with the arrival of an electric version of the G-Class
Mercedes-Benz has long hinted at the appearance of an electric version of the G-Class. The first concept was shown three years ago, and to get fans of the classics used to the idea, the company launched a creative PR-campaign. In a series of short videos, the classic G-Class “tests” the electric newcomer.
The new model is named Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology, rather than the expected EQG index. It’s an elegant compromise that retains the style of the legendary SUV while adding modern technology.

The electric G-Class retains the familiar styling, but has a few differences: instead of a grille, there is a black insert with LED trim and ventilation slots, and instead of a spare tire, a “backpack” for charging cables and tools (up to 10 kg) can be mounted on the rear. Improved aerodynamics through a new hood, spoiler and fenders have reduced the drag coefficient from 0.48 to 0.44, making the car more efficient on the road.
The electric G-Class is equipped with four electric motors – one for each wheel. Each of them produces 147 hp, and the total output reaches 588 hp and 1164 Nm, which exceeds the Mercedes-AMG G 63 (585 hp and 850 Nm). However, the AMG version is faster: acceleration to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds versus 4.7 seconds for the electric variant. The top speed is limited to 180 km/h, which is optimal for the combination of high performance and safety.

The electric version of the G-Class has a significant weight of 3,085 kg, which is 600 kg more than the gasoline G 500. The main reason is the 116 kWh battery, which provides a range of up to 470 km on the WLTP cycle. For charging, 11 kW AC terminals or DC fast chargers up to 200 kW can be used. This weight is offset by durability and impressive mileage on a single charge, making the SUV ideal for modern conditions.

The electric Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology retains its impressive off-road potential. It features a frame construction, a double wishbone front independent suspension and a De Dion rear suspension. The ground clearance is 250 mm and the entry and exit angles are 32 and 30.7 degrees respectively. The ability to traverse fords to a depth of 850 mm even surpasses that of gasoline models. This electric G-Class is not only stylish, but also ready for the real off-road.

Thanks to four electric motors, the electric G-Class lacks traditional differentials. However, the system simulates their locking, synchronizing the motors to achieve the desired effect. The familiar lock activation buttons now have other functions: downshift activation, G-Turn (tank turn) and G-Steering (reducing the turning radius by locking one of the wheels). These innovations add maneuverability and improved off-road capabilities.

In the interior of the electric version of the G-Class there are almost no changes compared to gasoline models. The Offroad Cockpit electronic assistant system retains the all-round vision cameras with the “transparent hood” function and has new modes of displaying information about the status of the electric powertrain. This allows drivers to better navigate off-road conditions and monitor the efficiency of the electric system.

Production of the electric G-Class will be carried out at the same plant in Austria as for other models. The starting price of the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology in Germany is 143 thousand euros, which is not so expensive compared to the gasoline-powered AMG G 63, whose price starts at 189 thousand euros. For the start of sales, a special Edition One with additional equipment will be available, raising the price to 193 thousand euros.
